VANCOUVER - Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe in New Westminster is under new ownership and I recently stopped in to speak with David MacMillan, the new proprietor about what plans he has for his new business.
"We're going to be having a grand re-opening on June 18 here at the Sweet Shoppe," said MacMillan. "It will be held from 4-9 PM and we will be serving all kinds of different British fare."
He said that he intends to continue in the concept of the previous owner in providing British groceries, sweets and ice-cream but he plans to add some hot food, which can be either enjoyed at the shop or taken home.
"We will be adding sandwiches, curries, soups and of course some of our wonderful meat pies you can take home and just heat-up for dinner.
"We have a full-range of English pies, Scotch pies, steak and kidney, steak and mushroom, chicken, chicken curry, Cornish pasty and the Melton mowbray in the mini and larger size.
"This is what we will really accentuate on the night of our grand re-opening and this is the new food that we will be introducing to go along with the sweets, British groceries, and ice-cream that have been sold here for years."
The ice-cream served at Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe is from the famous Birchwood Dairies in Abbotsford...and it is ice-cream to die for!
It's produced right on the farm in Abbotsford and not in a plant in some industrial park. The ice-cream is made with fresh cream and has a very rich and high quality.
There are also flavours that you would not normally find in other ice-creams, such as cotton candy, bubble gum and coffee crunch. There will be 20 flavours available along with a gelato and sorbet at the Sweet Shoppe.
David MacMillan is also the owner of Sugar Mountain Catering Company in New Westminster, which he has operated for many years.
He is now focusing his interest on both the catering business and Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe. However, his wife Jennifer and daughter Kaitlyn will mostly be in the shop on a daily basis, while he concentrates on the catering end of the business.
He said, "our company caters to a lot of weddings, corporate parties, and in-home functions. My area is really food - food preparation and production - as opposed to working in the grocery end of the business. I see my role as being able to expand on the sweets and U.K. groceries and that will come from my area of expertise, which is offering food that I feel can only make what has already been a great business even better."
