CANMORE, Alberta - There is one big reason to be at Centennial Park in Canmore on the Labour Day weekend - the 18th Annual Canmore Highland Games, touted as the "Premier Highland Games of Western Canada."

This year organizers are pleased to host Hamish Chisholm, the 33rd Chief of Clan Chisholm from the UK, and also the Honourable Alexander Bruce from Scotland. Both men will share the duties of being honourary Chieftains of the Games.

Each has a story ...Hamish Chisholm will be attending the 2008 World Gathering of Clan Chisholm being held from August 29 to September 1 in Banff/Canmore in conjunction with the Canmore Highland Games.

Honourable Alexander Bruce will represent his father Andrew Bruce, 11th Earl of Elgin, 15th Earl of Kincardine. The Bruces are direct descendants of King Robert the Bruce, and also of James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, an early governor general of Canada from 1847-1854.

Alexander will be hosting a private Scotch-tasting event at the Games, a fundraiser to mutually benefit the Canadian Friends of Scotland Foundation and the Three Sisters Scottish Festival Society.

Attendees will arrive in Canmore aboard train cars pulled by the historic Canadian Pacific Empress steam locomotive.

Hundreds of participants of Highland dance, piping, drumming and heavy sports will compete in their quest for excellence. Visitors can also enjoy sheep dog demonstrations, Celtic vendors from across Canada plying their wares, and clan tents providing family history and genealogy information.

The beer garden and evening ceilidh will feature non-stop entertainment in the heated festival tent. All tickets, food and refreshments are available on-site including haggis, fish and chips, and other traditional selections. No matter what the weather, all events go on.

This is billed as the biggest Celtic-culture experience in Western Canada. Don't miss it! For more information, visit www.canmorehighlandgames.ca, or call (403) 678-9454.
