Ann Roberts Receives Governor-General's Caring Canadian Award
By EIFION WILLIAMS
VANCOUVER - Long-time Vancouver Welsh Society member Ann Roberts has been honoured with a Governor-General's Caring Canadian Award. The North Vancouver resident is one of 48 Canadian recipients in the latest list and one of only three in British Columbia.
The Caring Canadian Award was created in 1996 at the instigation of Governor-General Romeo Leblanc as a means of recognizing the thousands of caring people who give so much to their fellow citizens, the unsung heroes who volunteer their time and efforts to helping others and who ask for nothing in return.
In general, Caring Canadian Award recipients have given extraordinary help or care to individuals, families or groups, or supported community service or humanitarian causes.
The Award to Ann Roberts is accompanied by the following citation:
"A woman of many diverse interests, Ann Roberts has devoted more than 25 years to assisting seniors and at-risk youth in the North Shore region of Vancouver. She has addressed community concerns about women and youth in crisis as a member of the regional youth justice community and is committed to finding solutions to homelessness.
"She is a strong advocate for affordable housing for low-income families and has represented seniors on matters of housing and safety. Ann Roberts has also dedicated 25 years to the Vancouver Welsh Society, serving in various key executive positions and helping to organize Welsh language events and religious services."
In congratulating Ann Roberts on the award, Welsh Society President Jane Byrne says that for many years Ann has been an effective ambassador for the Welsh in the Lower Mainland and her community service exemplifies the valuable contributions made by the Welsh community to Canada.
