2008 Irish Woman of the Year: White Rock's Kathy King

KATHY KING of the Irish Club White Rock is the 2008 Irish Women's Network Woman of the Year. She is shown above with 2007 winner, Violet Moore, and president of the IWN, Deirdre O'Ruairc.

VANCOUVER - Over 70 ladies gathered at the Delta Town and Country Inn to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Irish Women's Network on April 27.

It was a wonderful get-together of old friends and with many new ones forged. The Irish Women's Network first met 10 years ago in April 1998 at the Burnaby Library. Initiated by Mary Hatch, Marie Morris and a group of Irish women, the organization has gone from strength to strength and now comprises a network of Irish women's groups all over the Lower Mainland.

The Irish Women's Network now meets five or six times a year for special occasions or fund raisers and last Sunday's gathering was a great anniversary celebration and the occasion of the annual Irish Woman of the Year award.

This award is given to a woman who has made an outstanding contribution to the Irish community and the community at large, and the IWN is delighted to announce this year's winner - Kathy King from White Rock.

Kathy King, along with other local Irish people in White Rock, was involved in founding the Irish White Rock Club, which was established shortly after the Irish Women's Network.

Active in the Irish community over the last 30 years, Kathy has been very supportive to any new Irish moving into White Rock, always extending a warm hand of friendship and making them very welcome.

Kathy's organizational skills are legendary - if something needs to be done, ask Kathy. Many Irish events in White Rock have benefited from her hand and her organization skills are only matched by her diplomacy.

She has a way of getting things done and always keeping the peace, a rare quality. The Irish in White Rock are fortunate to have her and everyone was very happy to celebrate with her on Sunday.

Later, the celebration moved from Delta to continue at the Elks Hall, with great music and friendship. The White Rock Irish Club meet at the Elks Hall. For more details on the White Rock Irish Club, call Kathy at (604) 536-7723 or John Pye (president) (604) 542-0734.
