VANCOUVER - On May 31 the Delta Police Pipe Band hosted a Celtic Gala at the South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen.
The event was the first solo venture for the band and brought together performers as diverse as Shona LeMottée and her Celtic band; the DeDanaan Irish dancers; Chuck McCandless, an Irish baladeer; and members from Tsawwassen's Southpointe Academy Choir.
Of course, the Delta Police Pipe Band had a hand in the proceedings, providing a true Celtic flavour to the stirring musical and visual concert.
The South Delta Baptist Church is ideally suited to this type of event as it provides clear access to the stage for the band and performers, allowing band formations to be originated in the foyer and march spectacularly into the hall. Meanwhile, other performers are able to enter from the wings to complete the assembly.
The concert played to an almost capacity audience and band president, Moe Coll, was loud in his praise of the people who made the event a success. "It was a bit of a risky venture, flying solo, but it all came together with the incredible co-operation of so many people.
"The ticket sellers at Grapes 4 U and Flowers by Design; the many sponsors we had purchasing advertising in our programme; the Army cadets selling refreshments at the concert; the ladies of the band, organized by Paula Ralston; the coverage in our community newspapers and television; all provided the support necessary to make this event a success.
"Most of all, we mustn't neglect to recognize the over 900 people who came to watch the concert and provided the atmosphere that brought out the best in the performers. This has inspired us to consider making a concert of this type an annual event."
The Delta Police Pipe Band uses funds generated by this concert, and their very successful Burns Suppers, to offset expenses when they travel within Canada and overseas representing our municipality, province and country.
Last year, the band was invited to participate in the Netherlands International Military Tattoo. This year, in July, they travel to Monterey, California as the featured band in the Highland Games held over the July 4th weekend.
In 2009, the band has been invited to take part in Europe's second largest Tattoo, in Basel, Switzerland.
