Blackthorn: A Leading Light in the B.C. Celtic Music Scene

BLACKTHORN, one of B.C.'s leading Celtic bands release their new CD. |
VANCOUVER - Blackthorn is one of Vancouver's finest local Celtic bands. It all began back in 1988 when a small group of ex-pats found a common interest in a music that wasn't all that common in Vancouver at the time.
Since then, many members have come and gone, each bringing their own character, influences and interpretations.
The current line-up consists of Michelle Carlisle (vocals, flute, piccolo, whistle, fife), Rosie Carver (fiddle, vocals), Tim Renaud (vocals, bass, bodhran, mandolin), and Michael Viens (guitars, bodhran, vocals).
The group is delighted to announce the release of their latest CD, Sweet Forget-Me-Not, will be hosted by the Rogue Folk Club at St. James Hall at 3214 West 10th Avenue on June 21.
The new CD features a diverse selection of Irish, Scottish and Canadian songs and instrumentals with strong vocal performances and accomplished playing from all the band members.
Sweet Forget-Me-Not is Blackthorn's first release since the passing of band mate Graham Carver in May of 2006 and the title track was chosen as a dedication to Graham.
During the recording of the project, Dianne Foster who played accordion with the band was diagnosed with a terminal cancer.
As was her nature, she kept her spirits up and determinedly worked to complete the project. She was able to share the joy of hearing the final product but this release proves to be bittersweet for the remaining members of the band.
They were able to capture, one last time, some magical musical moments with their dear friend but are saddened with the realization that these are to be some of their last memories of her, making the sentiment of the title all the more poignant.....
Through it all, the love of the music shared between friends has remained at the heart of this group and will continue to light their way down that musical road for many more years to come. Blackthorn has become a leading light in the Celtic music scene in B.C. - and beyond. - Rogue Folk Review
