Local Musicians Show Support for Well-Loved Fiddler

By ERIN MULLAN Ceol binn a bhaint as an saol! The local Celtic music crowd did itself proud with the Maryaid fundraising for fiddle player Mary Brunner, who was out of commission for a spell after cancer surgery. It was wonderful to have people joining together for such a good cause, with the highlight of the night seeing Mary playing away at the heart of a great session.

Concert listings:
• Local singer Norah Rendell, formerly of Cleia, returns from studying music in Limerick with her new partner guitarist Brian Miller to play a gig at St. James Hall May 15
• Danish fiddle/guitar master musicians Haugaard & Hoirup play St. James May 22 with a new CD/DVD to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their duo
• Kansas City - Kansas City's The Wilders play rambunctious old time, country and bluegrass at St. James on May 30
• The first west coast appearance of Anglo-Scots trio Lau will be at the Vancouver Folk Fest July 18-20
• Also watch for all-gal New Zealand trio Pacific Curls at Jericho Beach in July. They mix Maori and Polynesian songs and rhythms with scintillating Scots fiddle tunes and may play a Rogue show as well
• Baka Beyond will be at Island Musicfest in Comox this summer
• Crooked Still, the wonderful old time band from Boston featuring Aoife O'Donovan on vocals, has a new CD and a new line-up. Cellist Rushad Eggleston has been replaced by another cellist, and Brittany Haas (sister of cellist Natalie Haas) adds fiddle. They play St. James on July 31
• For late summer and the fall, look for possible shows by Old Blinds Dogs and Shooglenifty.

• Ceilidh dancing at Ceperley Park in Stanley Park starts June 9 and runs every Monday night at 7:30 PM, weather permitting until August 11
• The Ceilidh Dance for the Youth Weekend West on May 11 Is open to everyone, beginning at 2:30 at the Jericho Hill Centre Gym

• The Wolf and Hound has a traditional session on Wednesday nights
• The Irish Heather has an Irish traditional session on Thursday nights and trad group Ballyhooley plays Tuesday evenings
• Bring your instruments and songs to the Friday night session at the Celtic Traditions store, starting at 8 PM. Listen for a new voice on In the Claddagh Ring (Fridays 6:30-8 PM on 102.7 fm) as Ita Kane-Wilson joins Michael Viens and myself as one of the show's hosts.

• The fine Scotland-based band Lau, who will be playing at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival this summer, have a new release out soon on the Compass label, simply called Live
• Crooked Still have a new one with their new lineup: Right Now.
