One day Jack Taylor will simply implode. Taylor is the beleaguered hero of Ken Bruen's thriller novels. The latest, Cross, is by far the most brutal in this series of crime fiction.
The guilt and regret weighing Taylor down would kill most of us but he just keeps rising from the ashes. Currently, Taylor is rambling through the streets of Galway obsessively contemplating his ruined life.
His surrogate son, Cody, is in a coma from a gunshot meant for Taylor. Jack is now making plans to leave town and begin a new life in the United States. However, he is approached by an old friend for help in an investigation of a gruesome murder by crucifixion of a young man.
When the sister of the murdered boy is found burned to death, Taylor decides he must hunt down the killer despite the extreme danger this will bring to his life. The chilling consequences are grisly.
Bruen's uncanny ability to convey Taylor's pain and rage oozing out of every page of the book is nothing short of ingenious.
