In Memory of Annie Byrne 1926-2008

ANNIE BYRNE

On May 14, Vancouver's Irish community gathered to bid farewell to one of its most prominent members at St. Augustine's church in Vancouver.

The well attended funeral service was a true tribute to her contribution, support and commitment to the Irish community over the years.

Anne Byrne was a member of Vancouver's first Irish theatre community and was involved in establishing its amateur co-op theatre in 1958 (which set the foundation for what has now become The Arts Club Theatre).

Her support in launching The Emerald Players theatre group during the 1960s holds stories and fond memories she shared with many, and we will cherish them to this day.

From the early days right through to serving a term as president of Stage Eireann in the 1980s, her love of the arts and promoting Irish culture in Vancouver was a passion.

She took her responsibilities seriously, but would whisper with a wink, "Ah, sure....It's a grand excuse to have a party!"

Her loyal support towards her husband Sean as he launched The Irish Centre in the 1980s, helped establish a festive and resourceful venue for the Irish community to gather in Vancouver.

Annie possessed a strong sense of pride in her Irish heritage, and could be spotted in a crowd a mile away on any given St. Patrick's Day. She blended with young and old alike, was ageless in spirit and was loved by all who knew her.

Apart from her contributions to the community, it is her unconditional love towards her family and her generous spirit and laughter that is her true legacy.

Annie is survived by her loving husband, Sean and sons Sean, Kieron and Derry as well as her "Darlin" grandchildren Caitlin Maura-Anne and Kevin. A celebration of her life brought friends and family together for a true Irish "Wake" following the service.

With tears, laughter, memories and music; all who were touched by her spirit were gathered together to send her off in style. Exactly how she would have wanted it.

The Byrne family would like to express their gratitude for the outpouring of support and heartfelt wishes that guided them through a very difficult time. Annie will be missed to be sure, but her spirit touched many - and her achievements live on in the Irish community today.
